About Juliet Furness

Juliet has honed her craft as an acting and voice coach for more than 30 years, drawing on extensive international and local experience.

Alongside running her acting school, she has taught stagecraft and voice for the new Master’s Program in Opera Studies initiated by Dame Malvina Major at Waikato University. Her work has also been featured by ShoutoutLA.

Juliet’s students have been cast in productions such as The Lord of the Rings, Young Rock, Mean Moms, My Life is Murder, Head High, In a Flash, Shortland Street, Ahikāroa, and many more. She regularly helps actors successfully audition for Toi Whakaari, The Actor’s Program, Unitec-as well as Guildhall London, Royal Academy, Royal Welsh College of Performing Arts, NIDA, and NY’s Atlantic Theatre company.

Having originally trained in Sydney at the Sydney City Actors Studio with Stella Adler’s approach, she returned to NZ and began working as an actor and teaching at Downstage Youth Theatre.

In 1992, Juliet left NZ on the invitation of Jeremiah Comey to be the assistant coach at his film-acting school in Los Angeles. Jeremiah had been brought to NZ as part of a Queen Elizabeth the Second Arts Council initiative for professional development of NZ actors.

Eventually, she moved to New York, sponsored by Jeremiah, to establish the feasibility of opening an East Coast branch of his school. This put her in a unique position in that her role was now that of a researcher of actor training in New York, widely known as the Mecca for training in the USA.

Despite plans ultimately not going ahead for the school, the template was already established and maintained for the 17 years she continued to live in New York. She now realises that this is her key point of difference as a teacher of acting.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have had access to this array of intellectual property in the field of training.”  She believes this has given her a real advantage when addressing the unique individual needs of an actor. “My father was an inventor,  my mother was a speech and drama teacher-so in a way I ended up with a niche that blended both.”

Most notably, Juliet trained at The Barrow Group, taught by Seth Barrish, private acting coach to Anne Hathaway. Little did she know, at the time of discovery, The Barrow Group would go on to become an astronomically successful acting school, recently listed number 1 by New York’s Backstage Magazine for private conservatories in the city.

This training was pivotal for her, and she has continued to work with The Barrow Group’s approach ever since. Seth Barrish has previously said, “Her level of training and acting experience is at a level that is enviable worldwide.”

In 2010, Juliet moved to Auckland, New Zealand, where she now offers her own acting classes and is committed to cultivating spontaneity, emotional truth, and transformation in performance.

Juliet’s work is invaluable to me as an actor. Be it when making split-second adjustments to my character on a film set, or when working a scene in a rehearsal environment. Her teachings are practical, and thanks to the specificity she encourages in class, lead to a great level of learning. I couldn’t recommend Juliet’s classes enough, and I am very grateful to get the opportunity to be up working every single week with a great group of people.
— Emmett Skilton (Young Rock)
Juliet’s way of working with actors has changed the way I approach acting. Her teaching encourages freedom, spontaneity, truthful behaviour and authentic performances. Juliet does the thing that challenges us all, she pushes you outside of your comfort zone. Although I’ve found it scary, that’s where I’ve learned the most. She gets you out of your head and in to your body. It’s less about any technical work and more about what happens for the performer organically. Her classes allow you to grow in a way where you learn to trust in yourself as a performer and trust that everything you need for a role is within you. If you want to improve as an actor, go to Juliet’s classes!
